Jews can trace their history in Prague all the way back to 970 CE. They were prominent members of society and had established a thriving community. In fact, by the time of the Holocaust 20 percent of the population in Prague was Jewish. But when the country was overtaken by the Nazis in March of 1939, a ghetto was created, which today is known in Prague as the Jewish quarter.
