Iran has fired at a U.S. cargo ship and has directed it to Bandar Abbas port on the southern coast of Iran, Al Arabiya News Channel is reporting.

The news agency reported the information around 10:30 am EST Tuesday, with little extra information.

Up to 34 American sailors are thought to be onboard the ship, according to Al Arabiya.

The news comes at a time the US is attempting to recreate diplomatic and economic ties with the Islamic republic, which were cut off following the Tehran embassy crisis in the 70s. Israel has fought tooth and nail against the evolving relationship.

More as this story develops.

UPDATE: Sources in the US government have denied the ship came from America, while others say the ship was waving a Marshall Islands flag. Iranian sources are still saying the ship is owned by the US.
