Israeli actress and model Gal Gadot is speaking out against accusations that a new ad she is featured in disrespects women.
The newly-named Wonder Woman is appearing in a recent commercial for Israeli fashion company Castro, which she has worked with since 2008. In the ad, Gadot can be seen dancing around, shimmying into a pair of jeans, and “twerking” with a pair of other women.
The Second Authority for Television and Radio in Israel now says it has received several complaints over the commercial, with detractors saying the spot objectifies women.
Gadot addressed the issue on Israel’s Channel 2 recently, saying she supports empowered women, and felt the ad was purely entertainment.
“I am very much in favor of women’s rights, being a woman myself, and I support intelligent, successful, independent working women. I shot the commercial from a place of having fun and amusement. Not every commercial comes with a certain agenda. For me, it was fun, and I had no intention of hurting anyone.”
She also spoke about her recent selection to star in the upcoming “Batman Vs. Superman” film, saying, “All in all, the support has been amazing. I’m a million percent involved, and I don’t relate to myself as a brand. It’s embarrassing for me to say that. I’m a human being, an actress, a model, and that is what I do for a living. Behind all that, there’s a troop of agents in Israel and the US that all [develop], together with me, a strategy or direction in terms of decision-making or deciding not to take a certain offer.”
“No matter what I do, there will always be those who will love it and those who won’t. So I keep on going my way, and whoever is with me, they’re with me.”
Sounds like a pretty strong Wonder Woman to us.
