An IDF soldier who was heralded as a hero after an explosion that left him with an amputated arm is set to become a married man.

IDF Captain Ziv Shilon got down on one knee at a Friends of the IDF gala in Miami Thursday, shocking his stunned girlfriend, Adi Sitbon.

“FIDF says that our job is to protect Israel; their job is to give us the reason. I wanted to take this opportunity to ask my girlfriend, Adi, just one question. You are my hope, my rock, and my everything. I wanted to ask you, will you marry me?” Shilon told his girlfriend on stage.

After Sitbon accepted, a message from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu played onscreen. Meanwhile, the Israeli leader posted a picture of the happy couple to his Facebook page, writing, “I was excited to hear that last night he proposed to his partner. It’s a very exciting moment. On behalf of myself and my wife with all my heart I wish them happiness. I spoke to him on the phone today and congratulated him. Ziv represents the best of us and is a great example of what love is, what Valor and sacrifice.”

Shilon was injured in October 2012 when an explosive device detonated near him at the Gaza border.
