Germany is upping security measures after New Year’s Eve partiers desecrated a Berlin Holocaust memorial.
A video made waves over the weekend, featuring young revelers urinating on the Holocaust site, as well as launching firecrackers. The four-minute clip shows nearby police, who did not try to intervene.
A spokeswoman for the government told JTA “we are all quite appalled. But it is not the first time.”
Now, officials are tightening security, including temporary fencing along the Tiergarten, Berlin’s central park.
The city’s yearly open air New Year’s Eve party is among the biggest on the planet, attracting more than one million people annually. The event takes place near the Holocaust memorial’s iconic stones.
