The Presidential Medal of Freedom ceremony took place at the White House today, with some recognizable Jewish names among the 16-recipient list.
Gloria Steinem was lauded for her work promoting civil awareness in her young journalism days, awakening a “vast and often skeptical” nation, President Barack Obama said.
Recent Nobel-winner Daniel Kahneman was also recognized, with the president saying the psychologist “basically invented the study of human decision making.”
Kahneman and Steinem were honored alongside fellow recipients like former President Bill Clinton and Oprah Winfrey.
Medals of Freedom are handed out each year to honor individuals who have made an especially merited contribution to the United States, and is America’s highest civilian honor. Last year, Israeli President Shimon Peres was a recipient.
