Temple Israel of Hollywood

Temple Israel of Hollywood

This deceptively modest looking synagogue, located on the residential stretch of Hollywood Boulevard west of La Brea, has recently embraced the youngish and increasingly upscale character of its Walk of Fame-adjacent locale, offering “happy hour” Shabbats and Saturday night fundraisers with such cult R-rated treats as “The Big Lebowski.” While we’re unsure how many congregants would, in fact, roll on Shabbos, the congregation does seem to be attracting some names big enough to be seen on the giant screen of the Chinese Theater down the street. Actor Jeremy Piven, apparently taking a page from his semi-observant “Entourage” character Ari Gold, is one well-known member and, considering the temple’s location, there must be some others. Past congregants include the two most famous Jewish converts in US history: Elizabeth Taylor and Sammy Davis, Jr.
