Stephen S. Wise Temple

Named for the legendary Los Angeles rabbi, this temple benefits from a central location in super-wealthy Bel-Air that’s equally convenient to merely affluent Westsiders and SF Valley residents. With a congregation that the LA Times has described as the largest on the planet, its level of celebrity membership remains a mystery. On the other hand, the temple gets plenty of eighties-style rock and roll glitz courtesy of its cantor, Nathan Lam. Lam is also a renowned vocal coach and producer who has worked with Ringo Starr, the Go-Gos, Lionel Ritchie and Rod Stewart. In 1982, he also tried to help Burt Reynolds improve his singing voice while making, er, “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” A few years later, Lam also went on tour with the hair metal band, Poison. Repeat with us now: “Only in LA.”
