Michael Bloomberg has formally announced he will not run for president.
The former New York mayor and Jewish billionaire said Monday that he worried his potential run, rumored for weeks, would deliver a President Donald Trump or Ted Cruz to America.
Americans cannot “make America great again” by turning their backs on the nation’s values, he said today.
“I love our country too much to play a role in electing a candidate who would weaken our unity and darken our future — and so I will not enter the race for president of the United States,” Bloomberg wrote for Bloomberg View.
“There is a good chance that my candidacy could lead to the election of Donald Trump or Senator Ted Cruz. That is not a risk I can take in good conscience.”
Though he would have run as an Independent, pundits believed his entry would have drawn voted from whoever wins the Democratic primary.
