The 20th Maccabiah is set to open Thursday night in Jerusalem’s Teddy Stadium with a festive procession of approximately 10,000 athletes from 80 nations.
Casspi, who was a first-round draft pick in 2009, was a member of the championship Maccabi Tel Aviv team in Israel before making himself available for the NBA draft.
Athletes from 80 countries will be competing in 43 sports in the quadrennial event that opens Thursday in Jerusalem.
The rising 24-year-old from Buenos Aires, at just 5-foot-7, will look to make some noise at Wimbledon.
The former NBA All-Star, who won the title this season in Israel with Hapoel Jerusalem, told the New York Post that retirement and a return to the NBA are other options.
The 18 NFL legends — including Jim Brown and Joe Montana — provided thrills for Israeli fans in a country that few of the players had ever visited.
This will be the first time the competition is hosted by a nation other than the United States, Canada, England or Australia.
The 34-year-old basketball player signed a two-year deal with the Israeli basketball team Hapoel Jerusalem last year.
Ahead of the 20th Maccabiah Games in Israel, 20 motorcyclists from Europe will ride from London to Jerusalem to express solidarity with the Jewish state.
Omri Casspi, the first Israeli to play in the National Basketball Association, was signed as a free agent by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
