ELLE celebrates the 20th annual Women in Hollywood

NO ONE SINGS A POWER BALLAD LIKE LEA MICHELE.

Had to get that out.

Lea Michele has had a tough year, dealing with the loss of her love and co-star, Cory Monteith, who died of a drug overdose this summer. But recently things have been turning around for the “Glee” star with the release of music from her debut album “Louder.” While her first single “Cannonball” was all big pop production, the rising diva has released a ballad, “Battlefield,” and it is glorious.

“Cannonball” was not a bad song, but it was too overproduced. In “Battlefield,” Michele’s incredible voice is given the space to shine all on its own in a song about ending a relationship. The lyrics are simple but powerful and Michele sounds better than she ever has on “Glee:”

No blood will spill if we would get out

Now, still it’s hard to put the fire out

What seemed like a good idea has turned into a battlefield

Feelings are shifting like the tide

And I think too much about the future

What seemed like a good idea has turned into a battlefield

We both know it’s coming

You and I

We have to let each other go

We keep holding on but we both know

What seemed like a good idea has turned into a battlefield

Listen to “Battlefield” below.

J-Connection: Lea Michele is Jewish.
