Dr. Henry Heimlich has used his own lifesaving technique for the first time at the age of 96.

The Cincinnati doctor, who is Jewish, reportedly stepped in and saved a woman who was choking while dining at the senior city center they both reside in. Heimlich was able to use his own “Heimlich maneuver’ to dislodge a piece of hamburger stuck in the 87-year-old woman’s throat.

Staff at the senior center reported that Heimlich said it made him appreciate how wonderful it has been “to be able to save all those lives.”

Heimlich is a retired American thoracic surgeon who is credited as the creator of the Heimlich maneuver, a technique of abdominal thrusts for stopping choking, first described in Emergency Medicine in 1974.
