Israel is currently participating in an extensive drill with militaries from the US, Greece, Poland and Italy.
The news was announced today by the Israeli Defense Forces, which said the exercise is the first of its kind in history.
The mission, called “Blue Flag,” launched yesterday, with 60 fighter jets out of the Ovdat air force base in the south of Israel. The operation, which runs through Thursday, is a step in improving Israel’s air defense capabilities.
“Israel lives in a dangerous neighborhood. We need the best equipped, best trained forces as possible to protect our people and our security,” said US Ambassador to Israel Dan Shapiro.
“We also need allies and we have great allies here…all training together and reinforcing a partnership that gets stronger with each passing year.”
“For us, it is about training together,” added a US Air Force soldier to the IDF Blog. “We have been leading up to this exercise for a couple years now. We’re here to continue to work together.”
“The aim of the exercise is to practice and improve our operational capabilities in striking enemy targets, working together as one team,” an Israeli air force pilot participating in the drill said to Channel 10.
The exercise, which has been in the works for over a year, is being conducted entirely in English. The Israeli Air Force launched two training flights a day over the last six months in preparation for the drill.
