Nelson Mandela received Mossad training, Israeli archives prove.

The beloved anti-apartheid fighter, who died early this month at the age of 95, reportedly trained with the Israeli spy network in the 1960’s, according to a document just revealed.

The document, a letter from the spy agency to the Foreign Ministry in Jerusalem, was released by the Israel State Archives. It shows Mandela trained in weaponry and sabotage in 1962 with Mossad agents, before his eventual arrest and imprisonment in South Africa.

Mandela traveled through several African countries in 1962, including Ethiopia, Algeria, Egypt and Ghana. In Ethiopia, he met with Israeli officials under an alias.

“He greeted our men with ‘Shalom,’ was familiar with the problems of Jewry and of Israel, and gave the impression of being an intellectual. The staff tried to make him into a Zionist,” the Mossad writer penned in the letter.

The letter was found a few years ago by David Fachler, an Israeli who was conducting research for a thesis on South Africa.
