Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to the European Union’s move to begin labeling products made in Jewish settlements of the West Bank.

“The European Union’s decision is hypocritical and constitutes a double standard; it singles out Israel and not the 200 other conflicts around the world.

“The European Union has decided to label only Israel, and we are not prepared to accept the fact that Europe is labeling the side that is being attacked by terrorism.

“The Israeli economy is strong and will withstand this; those who will be hurt will be those Palestinians who work in Israeli factories.

“The European Union should be ashamed.”

According to reports, on the morning of November 11, the European Commission in Brussels adopted a “notice on indication of origin of goods from the territories occupied by Israel since June 1967.”

A senior European diplomat told JTA on November 10 that the guidelines carry clarifications on E.U. requirements for labels on products that are sold in the European Union that are made or packaged in the West Bank, eastern Jerusalem, and the Golan Heights. The diplomat said that the guidelines would not affect trade with Israel or incur sanctions on the E.U. states that do not obey.
