Thousands of Orthodox Jews gathered Sunday in New York to protest a proposed Israeli bill that would require young haredi men to serve in the military.
The prayer rally took place in Lower Manhattan near Wall Street, with an estimated crowd of 35,000 stretching for blocks. As per Orthodox prayer custom, men and women were separated.
The protest was organized by Agudath Israel of America, with prominent Orthodox Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum in attendance. The spiritual leader is the grand rabbi of a faction of the Satmar Hasidic movement, one of the most recognizable haredi sects in the US.
The move to draft Orthodox men into the Israeli military has been debated for months, after the controversial Tal Law exempting such service expired last summer.
