Israeli President Shimon Peres formally received a petition for the release of Jonathan Pollard, a text signed by 108 Knesset members.

Pollard has been jailed in the US for 28 years on spying for Israel charges. He was made an Israeli citizen during his time in prison.

Since his capture, Jewish and Israeli groups have petitioned for his release, claiming his life sentence amounts to a harsh and unusual punishment.

Wednesday, MK’s from both the coalition and the opposition signed this newest petition, which Peres is expected to deliver to US President Barack Obama.

“It is both a right and a duty for me to bring before the President of the United States of America the request to free Jonathan Pollard which comes with agreement from across the political spectrum,” Peres said after receiving the petition, which was presented by Members of Knesset Nachman Shai and Ayelet Shaked.

“As president it is my clear responsibility to voice such clear consensus, I do it with pride and see it as a duty and responsibility. I raised the request to release Jonathan Pollard on a number of occasions with the President Obama and previous American presidents but I don’t remember such consensus on any issue either humanitarian or political between political parties. I will pass this petition on to President Barack Obama.”
